Is Alexa the new CAC?

There have been clear indications that Amazon is looking into entering the complex world of healthcare. Amazon’s Alexa has a lot of great features, could it be the next Computer Assisted Coding software? Let’s explore Alexa’s current coding skills.

Major E&M Changes on the Horizon

Last year, CMS began its “Patients Over Paperwork” Campaign under the direction of CMS Administrator, Seema Verma. This campaign pledged to ease provider burden in EMR by implementing changes to make evaluation and management code selection processes more efficient. The initial proposal changes were drastic, and very strong feedback was received in response. The AAPC combined the feedback from members and shared concerns with CMS that the timeline needed to be extended, and pointed out that no actual changes to the CPT or E&M guidelines were sought. After feedback, CMS targeted 2021 to collapse outpatient E&M into three levels with a stronger focus on medical decision making and time in the selection of visit codes 99201-99215.

In light of these upcoming changes, the AMA released intent to change CPT in 2021. Changes in the announcement include:

  • Deleting CPT code 99201
  • Eliminating the history and examination components for E&M selection (noting that a “medically appropriate” history and exam should still be performed)
  • Having Medical Decision Making (MDM) or time be the factor for level selection
  • Create common guidelines for E&M, including revised guidelines on MDM
  • New prolonged service codes

The announcement is located at https://www.ama-assn.org/system/files/2019-03/february-2019-summary-panel-actions.pdf

There will definitely still be a need for certified coders, as the new guidelines are developed and implemented. Keeping informed of changes through continuing education will be crucial for coders for the 2021 updates.
